Know your Fabric
Batik as a textile printing form originated in Indonesia, which later spread to India. It is a 2000 year old art and its origin can be traced back to the Khatri community in Gujarat who excelled at this art form.
This textile printing process has three steps - waxing, dyeing and dewaxing. Pre-defined areas on the fabric are applied with wax. Then this fabric is dyed resulting in the dye not being applied to the parts with wax. This fabric is then washed in hot water to remove the wax, resulting in unconventional design patterns being formed.
